Mayor Lumumba began his community work early, serving as co-director of the Malcolm X Grassroots Day Camp and assistant coach for the Jackson Panthers Basketball Organization. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 2005 from Tuskegee University. He earned his juris doctorate and a certificate in sports and entertainment law from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, in 2008.

After law school, Mayor Lumumba returned to Jackson and began work as a junior associate at Lumumba, Freelon, & Associates. Within a year, he was promoted to managing attorney and took on the responsibilities of personnel and daily operations of the firm. In 2013, he launched his own firm, Lumumba & Associates. He is also a founding member of the Mississippi Human Rights Collective, a co-organizer of the “Stand Up to Take It Down” rally to change the Mississippi state flag, and is the media representative for the Coalition for Economic Justice.
